Water filtration and why you need to filter your pond

Unlike lakes and rivers, a garden pond has a high concentration of fish in relation to the surface area. Nature achieves the balance by restricting the number of fish to the available amount of water. If you were to try and achieve this in your garden pond it would look quite uninteresting as all ponds would have to have an extremely small amount of fish.

To overcome this problem you need an efficient filtration system to remove the ammonia and nitrite produced by the fish. Because your pond is a closed environment there is no natural exit for the fish waste to leave your pond, which means the fish are left to swim in their own sewage.

Although it is possible to have clear water in the pond, this does not necessarily mean it is safe for the fish to survive in. The thing to remember when considering installing a filter is that fish grow and as they grow they require more food and therefore produce more waste.

The filter should be capable of filtering the water contents of your pond every two hours (approx) or it is very unlikely to keep your fish and pond in a healthy condition.

If you already have a filter and are not sure if it is working efficiently it is a quite simple procedure to check by using the many available test kits on the market. The main three being ammonia, nitrite and PH.

If your fish have not grown this can also be caused by the filtration system not being of an adequate size but this does not always mean that you have to replace the complete filtration system as most systems can be upgraded.

Please refer to the FAQ page for advice on what size filtration system you require for your pond.
